Sonja Picard Biography
Sonja Picard has been a professional artist since 1990. She started with sculpting clay, creating functional ware
for restaurants. Once her artistic journey began she moved on to exploring architectural ceramics, fine art
sculpture and mixed media. Sonja enjoyed great success as a ceramicist, with representation in galleries across
North America. In 2000 Sonja ventured into jewelry, taking courses at
Vancouver Community College and Langara College in Vancouver, BC. Using her sculpting skills she created miniatures in wax which evolved
to her current and popular jewelry line called The Sonja Picard Collection which now has grown to over 300 pieces.
The Sonja Picard Collection consists of wearable Sanskrit mantras (divine sound
vibrations), words and Divine images, is inspired and created in alignment with the
ancient Yogic concepts and tantric traditions of adornment. This ‘art of adornment’,
Shringar, or complete decoration, pertains to the romantic essence and ritual practice of
decorating the feminine form or image of a deity with jewelry or flowers revealing ideal
beauty and mystery. In tantric traditions, a woman’s ornaments are meant to symbolize
her personal cosmology and evolutionary direction. The tantric yogini signals her special
qualities through adornment, and thus connects with an idealized version of herself.
The Sonja Picard Collection includes a family of inspired adornment including the
Couture Collection, SPC Man, Manipura Belts; Karma Yoga Collection for not-for-profit
groups; and SPC Jewelry for Your Home.
Sonja Picard Design
The Sonja Picard Collection currently features over 300 pieces in silver and gold, and is
entirely based on yogic philosophy. Each piece is inscribed with Sanskrit words, mantras
or Divine symbols, intended to bring meaning to the wearer. The creations are inspired
by the ancient Tantric practice of adornment, or shringar , which is the practice of
decorating the feminine form. The Sonja Picard Collection is sold at boutiques, yoga studios and galleries across North
America and online. To view the list of retail locations, go to:
